About Us

Recognizing the invaluable bond between humans and their pets, we are committed to breaking the cycle of food insecurity faced by seniors in Brooklyn. By establishing a dedicated pet food pantry in collaboration with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, our goal is to ensure that seniors do not have to choose between feeding themselves or feeding their pets. This initiative provides seniors with access to pet food, promoting the well-being of both seniors and their beloved companions.

Team

Michelle Giancola

Founder and Executive Director

The Kiso's Pet Food Pantry for Seniors Project has been percolating in Michelle’s head since 2013 when her very cool tripod dog, Kiso crossed over.

Her love of animals stretches back to her first viewing of the movie, Born Free when she was a little kid. This passion for animals led her to pursue professional roles in international pet travel, dog training, grooming, and dog walking where she gained a global perspective on pet care standards and practices as well as valuable insights into domestic animals and the humans they live with.

Michelle has volunteered with animal rescue organizations such as Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR) and Angels for Mistreated Animals (AMA). Her volunteer work has allowed her to contribute to the welfare of countless animals and support the mission of no-kill shelters.

Michelle’s strongest skill though is being able to identify unlikely collaborators for projects. She surrounds herself with those that are experts in their fields but that are also amazing people to be around.

Maria Bowen

Director

Since 2017, Maria has served as Fundraising Coordinator for Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR), a Brooklyn-based 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter. She leads the special events and grassroots campaigns that drive SCAR’s outreach and fundraising, helping the organization rescue and rehome more than 2,000 animals each year.

Deeply rooted in the Brooklyn community, Maria has spent her career building connections across education, the arts, and small business—from co-founding the Gowanus staple Root Hill Cafe with Michelle and Andrew Giancola, to producing large-scale cultural events at Lincoln Center and the Kaufman Music Center. A NYC Department of Education teacher dual-certified in general and special education, she brings a strong commitment to inclusive learning and community engagement to her work.

Today, Maria combines her experience in education, arts leadership, and event management to advance animal welfare and champion a more compassionate world.
